TAMING ROWDY BOYS - "Our Valiant classes have some very rowdy boys. The two teachers of these classes instituted a "three strikes, you're out" policy. Anytime someone acted up the teacher paused for a moment and said strike. After three strikes they had to leave class for the rest of Primary. As a Presidency, whomever wasn't conducting or doing Sharing Time would patrol the hall. If someone was out we took them to their parents. So far many of the boys have made it to strike two but never strike three! " AMBER, TUCSON ARIZONA

My class is 5 6-year-old boys.
1st, I make sure they get their break! They can even go outside, with my supervision and get their wiggles out. I tell them we need to leave the wiggles outside the building, not inside.
2nd, Treats. Nothing big here. I was absolutely amazed at the power of one small tootsie roll or smartie. (incidently, I had 10 in my class when I first tried this) I explained at the beginning of class that while they were quiet I would put one on the chalk holder, and when they were noisey, I'd put it back in my bag. And if there weren't enough at the end of class for everyone, they'd have to share what was on the chalk tray. Yes, I did put some back, But even the students helped out with this.. " Shhhh, you need to be quiet or she'll put one back". I know we shouldn't "Bribe" or have treats every time. But if it helps establish a pattern of reference and the kidsand you know they can do it once, they'll be more likely to do it again.
3rd. Lipstick. I know a friend who put a tub of lipstick on the table and told the boys that if they weren't quiet she give them a big fat kiss on the check. The boys were completely mortified at the thought. She put on the lipstick to demonstrate what her lips would look like. Lets just say it scared them quiet. Good Luck.
